Krajicek Another Band Aid for Ailing Flyer Defense

Krajicek Another Band Aid for Ailing Flyer Defense

Yesterdays announcement that the Philadelphia Flyers had signed 26-year-old ex-Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Lukas Krajicek is another sign that GM Paul Holmgren is not making any progress in trade talks to acquire a rearguard from a current NHL roster. With Ryan Parent (back surgery – out until March)  and Danny Syvret (shoulder seperation – not progressing well in rehabilitation) on the mend, the Flyers have

Horrible Third Period Costs Flyers Game

Horrible Third Period Costs Flyers Game

Heading into the third period against the Atlanta Thrashers, the Philadelphia Flyers led 3-1.  On the strength of three second period goals, they had taken total control of the game and looked to erase the memory of Sunday’s ugly loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins.  With a 22-0-2 record for the season when leading after two periods, the game seemed to be in the bag.  But for the second

Flyers Walk Defensive Tightrope as Holmgren Seeks Deal

Flyers Walk Defensive Tightrope as Holmgren Seeks Deal

Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is looking to make a deal for a solid NHL-quality defenseman.  And it’s no wonder.  With Ryan Parent undergoing successful back surgery yesterday and out another 6 weeks and Danny Syvret expected out another couple of weeks with a seperated shoulder, Philadelphia’s core of defenseman is seriously depleted. That leaves Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, Oskars Bartulis and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen as their

Bergfors: Big Problem?

Bergfors: Big Problem?

Rookie Niclas Bergfors has had a hell of a season. When the season started he came out swinging. He got his first point, an assist, in the first game of the season, against the Flyers. He got two goals and four assists in October, four goals and six assists in November, and seven goals and three assists in December. He even got two goals in a 3-2 win against the Capitals on November 4th and has scored a goal in all four games against the Penguins. For a while, he was neck-and-neck with John Tavares for the title of "highest scoring rookie". But January has not been kind to Bergfors.

Flyers of the Past – The Curious Case of Todd Bergen

Flyers of the Past – The Curious Case of Todd Bergen

In doing research on a piece I’m working on regarding the 25th anniversary of the 1984-85 Flyers team and looking through the teams roster, Todd Bergen’s name caught my eye.  I remembered that Bergen came up late in the season and really had added to the Flyer attack.  I also remembered that after the playoffs he had basically disappeared from Philadelphia’s picture and hearing rumors that he had clashed with

The Trouble with Sidney, Crosby

Written on January 21st, 2010 by Melanie Smith

I usually write about the Sharks, but the dank dark California weather rendered in my the spirit to write about a different team, different player.  Enjoy! Today’s victim is Sid “The Kid” Crosby.  Now, the way I see it, Sidney Crosby isn’t the second coming of Wayne Gretzky.  Sure, he has admirable stats.  A Stanley Cup at just age 21.  He has good hockey skills, and good hockey sense.  My

Flyers-Rangers Gameday

Flyers-Rangers Gameday

The Philadelphia Flyers have got to view tonights meeting with the New York Rangers as a “must-win” game. Sitting on the outside looking in as far as the Eastern Conference playoff picture is concerned, Philadelphia will have to come up with a better effort than they have in their past three contests.  Losing on the road to the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs (4-0 looking lackluster) and conference-leading Washington Capitals (surprisingly

Flyers-Blue Jackets Gameday

Flyers-Blue Jackets Gameday

The Philadelphia Flyers open a crucial 6-game homestand tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Wachovia Center.  It’s the only meeting of the year between these two disappointing teams that were supposed to be battling for the top in their respective conferences.  The Flyers struggles have been well-documented, but they do seem to have a decent chance to get themselves back into the top 8 of the Eastern Conference.  And there is no time like the present
