Storybook ending
Jun 15th, 2009 | By Greener | Category: GreenerI trust you all are recovered from your Stanley Cup hangover. I am. Took the whole bloody weekend, but was worth every second.
What a game! What a finish! The NHL could not ask for a better end to the season than what the Penguins and Red Wings gave the fans. And lets give the Penguins some kudos for they pulled off one of the greatest comebacks of all time. They defied every odd imaginable in sports to win their third Stanley Cup. They never finished in the Top 5 in overall league standings at the end of the year. They changed their coach mid-way through the season. They lost the first 2 games in the final, making them have to win 4 out of the last 5 games. They lost game 5 which is often the pivotal game when the series has been tied at 2 games a piece. And they won the 7th game of the series on the road to claim the championship, something that has not occurred in baseball, basketball or hockey in 30 years. Truly a remarkable achievement.
Maxime Talbot played the game of his life and Fleury made a spectacular diving save in the dying seconds of the game to preserve the win. As a result, Crosby becomes the youngest captain ever to win the Cup and Malkin became the first ever Russian player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. Hats off to the Penguins.
By the way, for the record, I did not watch the hockey game with my wife so her theory that our combined energies were hampering the Penguins efforts is still intact.
Now that the season is over, news will inevitably slow down over the next few months. But stay tuned as Puckdrop will be covering the NHL Awards on June 18, the NHL draft on June 26, free agency on July 1 and any other news that may come our way until training camps open in September
Cheers
