End of Season Blahs
Jun 8th, 2009 | By Greener | Category: GreenerI know, I know…..the season is not over yet. There is still game 6 and potentially even a game 7 to be played in the Stanley Cup final. But once that final game is over, there is little to look forward to until next September when training camps open. Oh, there is the entry draft in June where I annually pray that the Leafs will finally land a superstar to call their own and the silly season of free agency on July 1, but they do not fill the daily need of a hockey fix. Even The Hockey News will cut back on the weekly publication and only issue 2 magazines for the entire summer.
Luckily, cable TV has given me The NHL Network. All summer long I can watch recorded games from the NCAA and the ECHL (I don’t know who won so I like to pretend that they are ‘live’ broadcasts) which gives me the opportunity to see players that may be in the NHL in a couple of years. It also helps my street cred because I can claim to have watched certain players often long before the casual fan has ever heard of them. And there is always LeafsTV which will rerun every Leafs game played this year but I can only take that kind of abuse every so often. Watching the Blue and White lose for a second time does not ease the suffering at all. You would think that 30 years of heartache one would become numb to the constant failure and losing, but that is not the case. I have become bitter, but not numb. And I just don’t follow any other sports as intensely to help ease the loss over the 12 weeks before the NHL gets back on the ice.
So, I will enjoy these last 2 (hopefully) games as much as I can. I love the summer, but waiting for September seems like such a way to waste it.
