Random thoughts and more

Random thoughts and more

No hockey on last night.  I was so bored.  These playoffs were some of the best I have ever watched.  How am I to cope when the games are over?  I am going to have to savour the Finals.  Hope every game goes into multiple overtimes right up to game 7.  And then I can focus on the draft..one of my favourite weekends of the year.

Time to dance with Stanley

Time to dance with Stanley

I am so torn in trying to predict who will win the Cup this year.  If I go with the Top 5 finisher winning every year since 1994, then I have to go with Detroit.  But they are so banged up right now with Datsyuk and Lidstrom game day decisions.  The series with the ‘Hawks was much closer than the 4-1 results show.  Three games went

Did you just say North Korea scored?

Did you just say North Korea scored?

If you have been reading the news the past couple days you would have found it hard to have missed the stories about North Korea testing a nuke.  I always smile when I hear “North Korea” and not because of the mental image of their pajama-clad childlike leader.  Although Kim Jong-Il can produce giggles, in my case, the mention of North Korea brings back a conversation I had with a long gone ex-girlfriend

Farewell #25

Farewell #25

I was saddened to hear the news that Peter Zezel had passed away yesterday at the age of 44.  Like many Maple Leafs fans, I will always remember him as a part of those good Leafs teams of the early nineties.  A center on a line with Bill Berg and Mark Osborne, Zezel was a huge part of the Leafs run to back-to-back semi finals in ’93-’94.  There is not

Welcome back Pat

Welcome back Pat

It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows that the NHL is just an old-boys club that the Oilers hired Pat Quinn to be their new bench boss.  You see, the Oilers General Manager is Steve Tambellini and Steve-o cut his teeth in hockey management with the Vancouver Canucks back when Pat Quinn ran that team.  Pat eventually got fired by the Canucks and ended up with the

Pens back to the final

Pens back to the final

Anyone else remember the NHL’s commercial campaign at the start of the year?  You know, the one when a player would walk out of a still shot that looked like a hockey card to talk to the camera.  Dion Phaneuf was shown checking someone into the boards, Patrick Kane was taking a shot on goal, and Henrick Lundqvist was making a save while commenting he never thought about the shots

Geno! Geno! Geno!

Geno! Geno! Geno!

Every now and then there is a perfect moment in sports.  A synchronicity between a player and the fans that rarely happens.  But last night in Pittsburgh, that perfect moment occurred.  Evgeni Malkin was having a dominating shift.  He was working the boards and keeping the Hurricane’s penned into their zone.  The savvy hockey fans in Mellon Arena began chanting his nickname “Geno” in appreciation for the fine work he was doing when Malkin broke away from the boards and headed to the “Canes net.  With the echo of the chant still resonating throughout the building, Geno slammed home his second goal of the night, well on his way to his first playoff hattrick.  Synchronicity at its finest and a beautiful moment in hockey. The Greener \M/

Hawks in Victoria Cup

Hawks in Victoria Cup

The NHL has announced that the Blackhawks will play Zurich for the Victoria Cup.  If you are unfamiliar with this tournament, a NHL team will play the European Cup Champion in Davos Switzerland.  Last year was the inaugural tournament featuring the New york Rangers playing Russia’s Magnitagorsk.  I got to watch the 2 game series on the NHL Network and it was some of the most entertaining hockey I had seen

I wonder….

I wonder….

What happens if the judge hearing the Coyotes case rules that Jim Basillie can have the team but he must keep it in Phoenix?  I know Jim’s offer is based on him being able to relocate the franchise, but stranger things have happened.  I bet he backs out of that deal quicker than the women who ran away from Mr Furley on Three’s Company. Speaking of the Coyotes.  I read today
